Behind Closed Doors: Pubes – Wax, Shave or Laser?

g9oar

I once slept with guy who after sex looked down between my legs at my neatly trimmed pubes and asked me why I didn’t shave.

He was a prick. I’d struggled to persuade him into putting a ‘hat’ on it and when I finally got on my knees to put the condom on with my mouth (a feat which requires quite some concentration when drunk) it turns out he took it off and ended up shooting his load half inside me. He probably had a porn-led sex education and clearly wasn’t experienced enough to judge his ejaculation (or didn’t want to). Regardless, I didn’t have much experience either and it was enough for me to question my self-image.

In the time between then and now my pubic grooming routine has gone through many changes:

  • What I thought boys wanted;
  • What I thought sexy was;
  • To please a specific partner;
  • What I thought would please a specific partner; but now it’s
  • What’s easiest and most comfortable for me.

Plain and selfish. The truth is there are so many potential lovers out there and each one will be completely different – you can’t guess what they want and if you could, would you enjoy being naked with them if it wasn’t everything else about you that they found sexy first?

There is no right or wrong way to have your lady bits groomed. Some like a natural bush, some like nothing – different horses, for different courses. The main thing is for you to be comfortable.

Shave, wax or laser?

Loads of people shave and if you do you should try to have a warm bath or shower first to soften the hairs, use lots of shaving foam/gel and always shave in the direction of growth with a new or very sharp razor.

The problem with shaving, especially with dark hair, is that the re-growth can be quick, obvious, itchy and stubbly so you really need to keep on top of it. Also, if like me, you’re prone to ingrown hairs you tend to be more susceptible to them after shaving.

Waxing pulls the hair out from the root and therefore lasts longer than shaving but is more painful and for anything above a simple bikini wax you’re best going to a professional. I prefer waxing because the finish lasts longer and I find the re-growth kinder – less itchy, finer and not prickly – although I know some people don’t like re-growth at all, so waiting for hairs to grow back to a waxable length just doesn’t float their boat.

With regards to the pain of waxing:  it will hurt – lots of hairs are being pulled out from the root at the same time – it will hurt more on more sensitive areas such as your lips, but it is bearable and over quickly. Furthermore, the more you get frequently waxed the less it hurts as your hairs aren’t as well grown in.

Laser treatment has only come about in recent years and has only just started to become affordable. That being said you’ll still only get the full benefit if you have a series of 6-8 treatments which will still cost upwards of £500.

Laser treatment is well worth the money though (if you have it) as it will leave you hair free for years – the laser travels down the hair to kill the root, so it works best on thick, dark hair. If you think you can withstand the pain, which I’ve been told is like being ‘twanged’ with a rubber band, you could be free of the 6 weekly pain of waxing or the stubble of shaving  – sounds manageable to me.

Please do research your salon thoroughly though to ensure staff have been given the appropriate training, you’re comfortable in their hands and they know exactly what you want before they’re let loose on you with that laser!
